L'entreprise Packard :

The Packard company:

Packard was an American automobile company founded in 1899 and disappeared in the late fifties. It had the reputation of building luxury cars of high quality and reliability but of a high cost. The firm also built trucks, but these were not very successful due to their high cost. The first vehicles were produced in Warren (Ohio) under the New York and Ohio Automobile Company brand, and the company was refinanced by a group of investors delighted with their purchase of a Packard, renamed Packard Motor Car Company, and relocated to Detroit. Packard manufactured trucks from 1905 to 1923 and produced a total of 40,000 trucks. Packard participated in tests conducted by the US Army in 1909 with his 3-ton truck carrying a 3-pounder gun. Even if these tests did not succeed, the performance of the truck was noticed and the American army acquired some before the beginning of the First World War. From the very beginning, Packard increased its production of trucks to supply the allies. By 1915, Packard was making more trucks than cars. It is this 3-ton truck (which will remain virtually unchanged until the end of the war, except for the suppression of chain transmission) with a 32CV engine that was exported to Russia.

L'auto-canon Packard :

The Packard self-propelled gun:

In November 1914, following the experience of the first fights, it was decided to modify the organization chart of the 1st company of armored cars (see the chapter on the history of the armored cars of the Russian Empire). The Izhora Factory received an order for two additional Mannesmann-Mulag vehicles on a 3.5-ton chassis as well as two vehicles on a 3-ton Packard chassis with a 32 HP motor. For simplicity and speed, these auto-guns will keep the structure assigned to the previous vehicles: engine and cabin armored, gun on a rear plate.

Histoire :

history:

This self-propelled gun was part of the first armored car company created in October 1914 and fought on the northwest front. The reorganized company received these vehicles in March 1915. They equipped the 2nd and 3rd sections. One of the two Packards was renamed "Captain Gourde", in honor of the captain of the same name, 1st decorated with the company of the order of St George, following his fight and his death during the battle of Dobrzhankovo on February 12, 1915, battle that also saw the loss of the only Mannesmann-Mulag auto-cannon of the first type. The Packards then followed the events of the fighting and transfers of the first armored car company until the end of the fighting and the arrival of the Germans in the city of Dvinsk (Daugavpils, Latvia).

The Packard self-propelled gun under the german flag :

The German army took into account the two Packards, the only vehicles of the former 1st armored car company that will be found in Berlin and Munich thereafter. They were refitted with a different armament: an automatic Becker gun (Becker Tankabwehrkanone 2cm M11) and three MG08 / 15 machine-guns, one of which was mounted on the roof with a protective shield. These self-propelled gun were seen in march 1919 in Berlin during the annihilation of the second spartacist rebellion and in may 1919 in Munich during the destruction of the bavarian councils republic. They were probably demented in 1920.

Description technique :

Technical description :

As with previous vehicles, only the engine and cab were armored by 4mm (sides, roof) and 5mm (front panel, barrel shield) chrome nickel steel riveted on angle brackets that protect rifle fire at 200m. As for the Mannesmann-Mulag, engine maintenance hatches were provided on the sides and engine cooling on the front. The driver sat at the left front, the chief on the right. A large swivel armored plate allowed the driver to drive and possibly fire with a machine gun. Access was through a single door on the left. A headlight was mounted at the front above the radiator. The rear body with rounded contours (the germans nammed it panzerei -armored egg) was unarmored and carried the main weapon. This was a 37 mm Maxim Nordenfeldt automatic marine gun. Fire was allowed on an area of 300 ° around the weapon. The supply was 1200 shots. This weapon, also chosen for the second version of the Mannsmann-Mulag self-guns, was preferred to the 47 mm Hotchkiss gun because its better rate of fire and its explosive ammunition was much more suitable for use against soldiers. A single Maxim machine-gun was carried away without a precise location. The supply was at 8000 shots in 32 standard boxes (250 cartridges). A load of 48 kg of TNT was also carried.

L'entreprise Mannesmann-Mulag :

The Mannesmann-Mulag company:

This company was created in 1913 in Aachen, it resulted from the purchase in 1910 by the brothers Carl and Max Mannesmann of the company Mulag (motoren und lastwagen AG - engines and trucks sarl). In 1928, following financial difficulties, Mannesmann-Mulag was bought by Büssing company. Also to note that the Mannesmann brothers (Alfred, Carl and Reinhardt) also set up in Remscheid from 1919 a company called Mannesmann automobil-werk, that will survive.
In the autumn of 1914, Mannesmann-Mulag had already built 100 trucks and buses for the army. A few months later, following the death of Max, his brother Carl took the reins of the company, then it was his brother Alfred's turn in 1918.
The company released four models of trucks, among them one of 4 tons and a 50 HP engine (L56b) and a 3 tons and a 42 HP engine (L57a). These are the models that will be exported to Russia.

Mannesmann-Mulag in Russia:

Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, the Russian General Staff envisaged the creation of a company of armored cars. It was therefore clear that only vehicles armed with machine guns would not be enough and therefore the decision was made to bring a greater fire support by a self-propelled cannon. Several studies were carried out and one of the most interesting was a transformation of a 4 ton German truck chassis Mannesmann-Mulag. Indeed a few copies had been delivered shortly before the start of the war. This transformation took place at the Izhora factories in Kolpino as well as for the Russo-Balt. The chassis was simply reinforced at the suspensions, and an armored superstructure was added to protect the cabin and the engine and a tray with a 47 mm Hotchkiss marine gun and two Maxim machine guns was installed at the rear. This self-cannon was built at only one copy.

Histoire :

History:

This self-propelled cannon was part of the first armored car company created in October 1914 and fought on the northwest front. It was integrated into the 4th section (self-propelled guns) in the company of two other unshielded self-propelled guns (see chapter on the 1st armored car company). He fought in Lodz as part of the Second Army with great efficiency. During the winter of 1914, the Company's vehicles were sent for maintenance and modifications to the Warsaw workshop. On February 12, 1915, in the vicinity of the village of Dobrzhankovo, the 4th section inadvertently fell on four German regiments, in the ensuing fight, the Mannesmann-Mulag car was hit on the engine and burned completely.

Second model:

In November 1914, following the fighting experience, it was decided to modify the organization chart of the 1st armored car company and the Izhora factory received an order for two additional vehicles. These were not the same vehicles as they were based on a 3,5 ton Mannesmann-Mulag chassis. The reorganized company received these vehicles in March 1915. They equipped the 1st and 4th sections. There is very little information on their existence during the war. It is known that one of them took part in the parade of the first anniversary of the October revolution which took place on November 7, 1918. In 1921, one is indicated on the lists of repair of vehicles in the 1st Factory repair of Moscow auto-machine guns then is destroyed by lack of spare parts.

Description technique du 1er type :

poids : 5,7 tonnes
équipage : 5

Technical description of the first type:

As with the Russo-Balt machine-guns, the transformation was rapid. It is sufficient to protect the motor and the cabin by 4 mm flat armored plates riveted on angles welded on the chassis. There were hatches on the sides of the engine for maintenance and on the front for cooling. Access to the cabin was via two doors (one on each side). In the cabin were the driver (right) and the chief officer (on the left), who could use a machine gun through a sliding trapdoor. Behind the cabin was an unarmored open compartment with the 47 mm Hotchkiss marine gun protected behind a 5 mm armored shield. The deck had unarmored wooden sides but very low, which did little to protect the crew. In addition, two small embrasures at the front on both sides allowed the firing of machine guns. Access was via two small ladders on each side.
The 47mm marine hotchkiss gun was very precise and easy to use, the supply was 1200 shots. The clearance of the part was limited to 13 ° on both sides because of the bulk of the protective shield. There were two Maxim 1910 machine guns: one in the cabin on the left and the other in the rear compartment on the right or on the left. They were supplied with 8000 shots in 32 standard boxes. The vehicle also carried a demolition load of 48 kg of TNT (in 3 parts).
The engine developed 50 CV (4 cyl), the transmission being by chain.
Copies produced: 3 (1 of the first type +2 of the 2nd type)
Weight: 5.7 tonnes
Crew: 5

Differences between the two models:

The main difference was the use of a 3,5-ton Mannesmann-Mulag chassis with a 42 HP engine. The barrel was changed to a 37 mm semi-automatic hotchkiss. The rear body gun machine-gun was also suppressed. The sides of the board had been raised to better protect the servants, the front cabin was redesigned and resembled that of the Packard auto-cannon.

L'entreprise Russo-Balt :

the Russo-Balt company :

Formerly Russo-Baltic, it was initially a subsidiary of the Dutch-German Van der Zypen und Charlier company, which produced railway wagons. This company received an important order from Russia for 500 railway cars. In order not to pay customs duties, a factory was built in Riga (Latvia) then in the Russian Empire. Later the factory became a distinct company under the name of Russo-Baltic wagon company, it developed rapidly to the point of covering 20 hectares of workshops and 4,000 employees in 1912. In 1895 a parallel branch was created ("Phoenix") and the two companies were absorbed by the Prodvagon trade union in 1906. This union was a form of regrouping of companies under state control in order to rationalize and better control needs, prices, supplies, etc ... In terms of rolling stock. In 1914, it accounted for 97% of Russian car production.
In 1908, Phoenix became the automobile branch of Russo-Baltic, then the name changed to Russo-Balt by short cut due to the French. Indeed, Russo-Balt's chief engineer, Julien Potterat, Fancophone Swissman, had already designed a car for the Belgian firm Fondu. It is this car that served as the basis for the first model of Russo-Balt. It was the model C-24/30 (model C with estimated power 24CV and maximum power 30CV with engine of 4500 cm3) released in May 1909 then declined in C24-35 and C24-40. It should be noted that the first use of tracked system kégresse will be on a C24 / 40 in 1913 (the French engineer then working for the tsar).

The Russo-Balt typ C :

After the Charron-Nakashidze adventure, the Russian armored car was stalled. It is the outbreak of war that will revive the idea of an armored and armed vehicle. After the first artisanal experiments in East Prussia, on August 17, 1914, War Minister VA Sukhomlinov ordered the Colonel of the Imperial Guard's regiment of the Imperial Guard Alexander Nikolayevich Dobrzhansky to create and command a "battery of armored cars , Later renamed company. After a study of the different civilian models suited to the project, the choice was based on the Russo-Balt model C-24/40. Eight chassis were reserved (№ 530, 532, 533, 534, 535, 538, 539, 542). The transformation into armored vehicles was very fast, just a month and a half. This was carried out in the Izhora (Izhorski) factories in Kolpino under the supervision of Colonel Dobrzhansky himself and naval engineer A. Y. Grauen. To save time, the idea of turrets was abandoned and Maxim machine guns were placed in the body firing through sliding traps. Eight vehicles were built and on 12 October the first full company could be inspected by the Tsar in person before leaving for the front.

Histoire :

History:

The story of the Russo-Balt machine-gun is closely related to that of the first armored car company because it is the only unit to which it will be attached throughout the First World War. It ends the war in Dvinsk in the spring of 1918. It is not known how many Russo-Balts escaped capture from the german army. There are, however, no photos of Russo-balt under German colors (as for the Mannesmann-Mulag cannon), but some of them were in the hands of the Red Army during the Russian Civil War and one of them changes of hands twice. In 1921, the Red Army still had three copies that were demolished shortly thereafter.
Note that a replica will be reconstructed according to the original plans in 2009 and exhibited at the Moscow Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
